VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Name: Oscar
Age: 33
Physical Appearance: Here. The branches coming out of his lower back can be moved under his conscious control.
Point in Timeline: Oscar was working on a multitude of plans and excuses to follow Silas out of the Springtide home- partially out of concern and partially envy of the adventure.
World Description: Oscar's world is that of a central continent branching outward into many islands and other lands. His people, the Springtide Clan, live within a dense forest and make their homes in caves and tunnels below the trees. Many centuries prior, his people were broken off from another human clan, banished from the center of the world for misuse of magic. After making a pact with the Faekin of the forest, the Springtide built a new life, secluded from the other clans of the world. They learn about the outside world largely through books and the rare trade caravan willing to venture so far into the forests for goods. A Springtide could go their entire life without ever leaving their homeland and thus would never see the sky, as even the land above them is covered in a tall, thick canopy of trees that obscures the heavens.
The Springtide largely do not practice magic, but the tradition is kept alive by a strict Druidic Order, of which Oscar is a part of. His world is preindustrial, many of the world's people living directly off the land as nomads or within monarchy ruled kingdoms. Magic is present in the whole of the world, but many cultures see it as dangerous and suspicious, the cause of past disasters. Oscar's culture is particularly careful with their magic, trying to learn from the failures of their past. As a result, they never use their magic aggressively. Magic is only practiced for utility, healing, or defensive applications.
There are many different fantastical races in the world. Oscar knows of the Human Clans, Faekin, Dragons, Rahuth, Vampires and Elves. The Springtide are one of the human clans, who have a wide variety of human features and attributes, with healthy lifespans of roughly 100 years. The appearance of Oscar's bright red hair and branches springing from his lower spine are both due to being a fully realized Druid.
History/Background:
Oscar was adopted into an affluent Springtide family. As a member of the nobility, he was expected to maintain Springtide traditions. He tried a multitude of hobbies and crafts while never quite being satisfied with any of them. He kept his life in near-constant motion. He continually skirted the edges of the Springtide rules which is, in itself, a Springtide tradition.
When he was fourteen he entered his arranged marriage. His wife was a strict and effective person and there was no love between them (also a Springtide tradition). With the introduction of "husband" title to his life, he now had a wonderful new realm to experience- affairs. Affairs were considered the only way to seek affection and were a usual hobby of the rich and idle. However, as Oscar started to experience more and more love affairs he realized that the love part of it was very tedious. He decided that the best way to avoid that was to make it a pure transaction. So, by eighteen, Oscar was hobbyist prostitute.
Prostitution, like many things in Springtide culture, was treason. This never stopped Oscar but it did mean that when he was finally caught in the act he was left with a tough choice. The punishment for treason was solitary confinement. There was another option, technically, but no one had ever succeeded at it so it was considered an non-issue. Oscar took that as a challenge. Rather than rot away in solitary he took the challenge to become a druid.
The druids, of course, took this challenge as an insult and sought to maintain the purity of their order. Oscar was slotted into training for the protectorate sect. The training for druids is harsh regardless but the order was especially rough with Oscar in order to deter a criminal from becoming one of their ranks. Through sheer willpower and spite Oscar endured through the training until eventually he was ready to be Seeded. In a final act of mutual spite, his seed from the world tree was placed at the base of his spine causing him many inconveniences.
During his training he met and befriended two other druid candidates, Silas and Irving. Oscar wouldn't say it but their support was probably one of the reasons he endured (while another was his newly acquired fondness for physical pain). When Silas got a vision of a disastrous future, Oscar didn't intend to follow him. However, he worried and soon started planning excuses to leave on his own personal quest with whatever excuse the elders would accept.
Noteworthy Positive Characteristics:
-Passionate. Oscar is a person who is driven by his passions. He has an inner fire that is absolutely incapable of going out. When he finds something he likes he throws himself into it entirely. Although his efforts may not be focused for long, as he is also flighty, the passion put into those small projects is indisputable.
-Eager to learn. Although Oscar has an amazing sense of ego this doesn't make him a poor student. He's actually very capable of apprenticing and learning a new craft. He doesn't shy away from failures and takes in new knowledge voraciously. This allows him to adapt, at least on a surface level, to other worlds- even though he's never left the Springtide home.
-Ego. Some people view ego as a negative trait. In Oscar's case, though, his ego creates a nearly impermeable sense of self. In Oscar's mind, he is the most valuable person in the world. There's no merit in the idea, he's just so sure of itself that he doesn't let himself get caught up in insecurities.
Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:
-Spite. Oscar hold grudges. Oscar holds grudges like it's a recreational sport. This would not be inherently negative or positive except he maintains these grudges to the point of physical detriment. When someone challenges him and implies he's incapable of doing it he will often commit beyond reason to the task. This makes him both a danger to himself and capable of being manipulated.
-Insatiable. "Content? That sounds so terrible, I don't think I could ever humor being content." Oscar is a constant well of various desires. His yearnings and inability (or lack of desire) to resist them have always landed him in trouble and, presumably, will continue to do so. He picks up crafts, hobbies, devotes himself entirely to them, and then moves on to the next.
-Insincere. Lying is an art form. Oscar enjoys perfecting art forms and, honestly, lying is the one he's stuck with for the longest. His lying isn't compulsive, it's recreational. Part of this ties into the fact he'd really rather not get intimate with anyone. He doesn't like sharing things about himself and lying is a great, socially-acceptable way of getting past it. In his mind, even the consequence of not being believed is fine and dandy because it allows him more freedom.
-Inflexible. Oscar talks a great deal about his many talents and adaptability. However, at his core, Oscar is a Springtide and it will take a great deal of effort for him to leave that mental/emotional comfort zone. Several of his negative traits (spite and insincerity) are considered normal in the culture of Springtide. He can change externally but, when it comes down to it, he's a Springtide at his core and doesn't care to change it.
Powers/Abilities:
- Conscious Shielding: Oscar can channel his magic to form a visible barrier between himself and any source of harm. This appears as a projection in red (the same color as his hair) with various intricate symbols that absorbs force. This only activates when he chooses to use it.
- Unconscious Shielding/Magic Overflow: Unlike the conscious shielding, there is also his own passive damage absorption. He has no control over this and instead it takes the form of a strange bark-like sensation when a force comes in contact with his body. This is not under his conscious control and, rather, is linked to his own personal magic supply. The excess magic causes jitters, nerves, and insomnia so he likes to deplete it but it is very difficult to manage. Sex will channel some of his energy allowing him to both feel tired and fail in his unconscious defense. With a near-full supply of magic he can fall from a five story building and walk away unharmed.
- Druidic Constitution: Oscar is capable of purging poisons from his body which also includes immediately cleansing intoxication if need be. He can also cleanse these from others through physical contact which takes the toxin into his own body. Since he's had no exposure to any of the Zhautas aphrodisiacs, he will have no resistance built up and not be able to cleanse them.
- Minor Druidic Magic: Healing/Providing: All druids are capable of the three disciplines however the two they do not specialize in are much weaker and less practiced. Oscar could close a minor wound with healing or briefly accelerate the growth of a plant.
-Transformation: Oscar's magic allows him to transform into a peacock. It's, like, a magical-looking peacock although this isn't a fairy tale and he can't talk in that form. It matches his red-brown color scheme, has his signature Seeding branches, and has several runes inscribed on it that allow him to use all his magic regardless of form. He can also fly. You know, like a normal peacock does.
Character Fears:
- Solitary confinement/sensory deprivation. Since Oscar craves any kind of stimulation, the idea of being isolated or limited in what he can experience would have psychological damage. Prolonged exposure can cause panic, rash decision-making, and desperation.
- Intimacy. Despite not being a compulsive liar, being open and honest with people is a repulsive idea to him. He would describe it as a simple dislike but it is more deeply-rooted than that since it, essentially, goes against one of his life principals.
- Being trapped with painters. Oscar has tried just about every form of art but the one that escapes him is painting. Since he's not capable of mastering it he has decided, simply, that the art of painting is completely without merit. He hates everything about painting and painters and while it is an irrational fear it definitely works.
